I loved the crisp, fast action of the Avantt and its light swing weight, but unfortunately the Zone is not nearly as nice. But superior craftsmanship commands a much higher price! Remember that it will cost you an additional $15 or more to send your rod in unless you are using the G. Loomis Expeditor program. The ability of this rod to track precisely combined with its ability to form beautiful tight loops allowed it to perform almost as well as the best rods at long range. The NRX LP has proven to be an outstanding rod as a 5-weight, winning our 5-weight Shootout several times. Rods are repaired or sections replaced. There is no question that the Shadow is our best Mid Priced 4-weight rod. Like the Zenith, Wraith, Zephrus and all Hardy rods from the last decade or so, the blanks for the new Zephrus Ultralite family are rolled in Korea. The Pure is unquestionably one of the best looking rods in our Shootout, with some of the best craftsmanship. The quality of the cork was much better too, but still not in the class of what we found on the Recon or Shadow. The stiffness did not allow much feel but the accuracy was surprisingly good. The components are not in the same class as the Helios 3F, but that is to be expected considering the price. The tips on the faster rods bend more. Rods are repaired, not replaced. The Zephrus was able to turn over our 12-foot hand-tied leaders with ease. In this Shootout, we again used the Scientific Anglers lines, which we have found to cast better and last longer than other brands. This rod gives me the confidence that I can place the fly just where I want it, and do it with a delicate presentation. In fact the JXP had one of theheaviestswing weights in our Shootout, tied with the IMX Pro and Clearwater. Heavy in hand! The cork handle is a western style grip with a comfortable swell in the middle and a nice taper forward. The H3F rated slightly higher over all, but the Asquith had a lot more butt and mid-section power to blast out long casts. Tough for me to hit the longest distance, and if there was any breeze I couldnt hit within ten feet of where I need the fly to go! . These will hold up longer, even with hard usage. Because of the cost, we downgraded the Asquith to 7 points.
